Smart Student Accommodaiton - Spotlight on the Thames

Published by : SSA on 04 August 2023

London, one of the most vibrant and historic cities in the world, owes much of its character to the majestic River Thames. But if you are always travelling on a tube or on a bus on a major thoroughfare to your studies, it’s easy to overlook this major focal point. In this location spotlight, we'll explore the remarkable features that make The Thames a must-visit destination for any university student looking to experience the true essence of London.

The Thames is steeped in history, dating back to Roman times. As you stroll along the riverbanks, you'll encounter iconic landmarks such as the Tower of London, the Houses of Parliament, and the other legendary bridges. The Thames has played a pivotal role in shaping the city's culture, trade, and identity, and has unique historical significance. On the North Bank you can discover the WH Smith Gardens, an interesting collection moored boats, Cleopatras Needles and many naval references. And on the South Bank you can promenade, beach combat low tide, enjoy the public spaces in The Royal Festival Hall, pass the famous HMS Belfast up to the warehouses in Borough where you will find The Globe and the oldest pub in London, The George in Southwark, built in 1676 and frequented by Shakespeare. Next to The Globe there is a small row of houses where Sir Christopher Wren lived while he was building St Pauls, just a short row across the river. The view from the Tate Modern across to St Pauls is one of London’s most famous.

If the River Cruises are a bit pricey you can always take the River Bus to see life on the water. And if you are feeling adventurous, there are several boat clubs in London that offer canoe hire on the Thames or London canals. These along with some amazing Free Thames events you can enjoy this September, are listed below.
